The 1970s
In 1972, Broan had less than 10% market share in the range hood and bath fan business; today that market share has grown to nearly 90%.
In 1972, Broan sold its 1,000,000th range hood!
After more than three years in the engineering process, Broan introduced in 1974 trash compactors – a major new appliance – under the Broan and Nautilus labels.
In 1974, Broan also introduced its “Millionair Line” of bathroom fans and heaters, with 21 completely new designs – the most comprehensive offering ever introduced by any U.S. manufacturer.
In 1975, Broan targeted the new home center market and began selling to Lowe’s among others. Several years later, Broan was selling to 22 of the largest 25 home center chains nationwide.
Broan was awarded in 1976 the range hood business of Sears, at the time the world’s largest retailer. Sears accounted for some 20% of Broan’s range hood production, approximately a truckload a day. After its first year, Sears awarded Broan its Symbol of Excellence – a coveted award given to only 5% of its 12,000 suppliers.
