HARTFORD, Wis. – BEST®, a leading designer of luxury range hoods, today announced that its Generation II of The Sorpresa® Collection of Italian-inspired range hoods has won the 2012 GOOD DESIGN Award from The Chicago Athenaeum: Museum of Architecture and Design and the European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. This is the second year in a row that the Sorpresa Collection has won such an award.
The Sorpresa Generation II Collection was created as an expansion to the original Sorpresa Collection and includes Fusion,Intrigue,Sphera, andSun. The full Sorpresa Collection includes 13 unique range hood designs that challenge perceptions of what a range hood can look like.
Sorpresa, which means “surprise” in Italian, takes on shapes and styles that are designed to immediately become the focal point of any kitchen, while still delivering the world-class ventilation technology expected from a BEST kitchen ventilation product.
One of the world’s largest and most distinguished design competitions, the GOOD DESIGN Award program presents awards annually to products that exhibit high design aesthetics and innovation. Winning manufacturers are those that stretch the envelope beyond what is considered ordinary product and consumer design. The Sorpresa Generation II Collection was chosen as a winner in the “Kitchen/Appliances” category and was selected from several thousand manufacturers from more than 50 countries. Last year, the Vertigo Double model, from the Sorpresa Generation I Collection, received the 2011 GOOD DESIGN Award.

The complete line of 13 designs are available in three categories: Island hoods, called Gloss, Secret, Sphera and Vertigo Double; Chimney hoods, called Dune, Eclisse, Fusion, Intrigue, Modulare, Sun, Surf and Lipstick; and a Ceiling hood called Cirrus.
Since its debut in 2011, the BEST Sorpresa Collection has received awards from several magazines and associations, including Kitchen + Bath Business, “KBCulture” and the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID), which awarded the collection the “Imagine Top Pick 2011” at the Architectural Digest Design Show.
At the 2013 Architectural Digest Home Design Show, BEST displayed models from The Sorpresa Generation I and II Collection as well two prototypes for Generation III range hood designs. As they are named in Europe, the Overside (pictured below, left) and Fluttua (pictured below, right) will first be available in Europe in 2013, according to Wellnitz. BEST will also feature the new optional white-glass panel for the Cirrus range hood at the Architectural Digest Show this year. “We are excited to see the reaction to these new prototypes as we consider our plans for 2014,” Wellnitz says.
